Pinewood Derby

The Pinewood Derby is the biggest and probably most exciting event the Pack does all year long.  Scouts take a kit, which consists of a block of wood and 4 nails, and make the most incredible race cars you'll ever see.  They are then raced against one another down a long wooden track accompanied by some incredible electronics provided by a friend of Pack 628.

Each year Pack 628 has design categories that the scouts have the option to try and model their cars after to win certificates, where the winner is voted on by the leaders.

  • Best Cub Scout Pride

  • Most Patriotic

  • Most Colorful

  • Most Aerodynamic

  • Best Sci-Fi

  • Best Sports Themed

  • Best Original Design

  • Best Comedic

  • Derbymaster Choice

We understand that not everybody has woodworking tools. We encourage families to talk to their Leaders / families to see if they have some tools to assist you!  We have many talented families!!!!!

There are many good resources on building the perfect car for you and your Scout. Here is one site: https://scoutlife.org/pinewood-derby/

In 2021, due to the pandemic, we tried a live-stream of the event which turned out very successful.  We will try to continue this in the future and you can find the videos by clicking here. You can also view both videos on the Pack's YouTube page here.

General Information

We base our rules off of the Francis Scott Key (FSK) District's Super Derby rules.  For more detailed information open the link below.

Qualifications to race:

  • All registered Pack 628 Scouts (Lion to AOL), along with Scout siblings, Non Adult Cub Scout alumni, parents, or grandparents are eligible to participate.

Materials

  • The Pack provides every registered Scout with the official BSA Pinewood Derby kit

  • If a sibling, parent, or grandparent wishes to race kits can be obtained from the Pack for $7/kit

Race Categories

  • Rank Class - Scouts will race against their peers of the same Rank.  The top 3 racers in each rank will receive a trophy.

  • Sibling Class - Siblings are more than welcome to race each other.  The top 3 racers in each rank will receive a trophy.

  • Scout Alumni Class - Former Scouts that are not adults are more than welcome to race each other. The top 3 racers will receive a certificate.

  • Adult Class - Who says adults can't have fun too?  Adults can race each other for bragging rights and the top 3 racers will receive a certificate.

  • Cub Scout Fastest Run will be placed on a Plate and Trophy that the scout can display until the next Pinewood Derby!

Eligibility

  • Every racer must have built their car the same year as the race.  No cars from previous years will be allowed to race.

Inspection/Registration

  • Each car must pass inspection before it can be registered to race

  • Inspection/Registration is held the night before the race at a determined time and location; typically at the race site.

  • The general rules for all cars to pass inspection and be registered are as follows:

  1. The car body must be made of wood.

  2. Weight - Must not exceed 5.00 ounces weighed to the hundredth of a gram.  Get as close to 5.00 ounces as you can!  You want to make sure they make it all the way down the track.

  3. Height, Length, & Width - Must not exceed:

  • 5" in height,

  • 7" in length,

  • 2 3/4" in width

  • The height restriction is because we have custom electronics at the finish line gate and we want to make sure that no car is too tall to pass through.  The length restriction is to make it fair for everybody to race.  A longer car may have the ability to finish first; your car can always be shorter then 7".  The width restriction is to make sure that cars do not rub or hit each other as they run down the track.

3.  Wheels & Axles - Wheels and axles must be original ones obtained in the official BSA kit and cannot be modified in any way other than a light sanding of the treads to remove seams and imperfections as well as painting of the hubs.

4.  Underside - The unobstructed clearance of the car must be 3/8" or more from the total underside of the car to the base of the wheels for track clearance.

5.  Lubricants - Only dry lubricants such as graphite are allowed.  Liquid lubrication is not permitted.  Lubrication may be added after a car has passed inspection while registration is being processed.

6. Must be free wheeling with no starting or launching devices

7. No magnets are allowed to be used on or in the Pinewood derby car and you cannot have a metal nose/front end of car.

  • Once a car has passed inspection and is registered no further alterations to the car is allowed in any way.           NO EXCEPTIONS!
